American Quarterly publishes one special issue per year each September. Special issues are edited by the guest editors in collaboration with the AQ editors and the AQ Managing Board. They are comprised of a combination of essays that are solicited by the editors and essays that are submitted to a call for papers. The process is subject to editorial but not blind peer review. For more information on special issues and a look back at past special issues, please visit the Special Issues page. Call for Papers: American Quarterly Special Issue, 2. The Chinese Factor: Reorienting Global Imaginaries in American Studies. Guest Editors: Chih- ming Wang, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan Yu- Fang Cho, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. The rise of China, both as a palpable geopolitical force and a contested discursive formation, has centrally occupied US global imaginaries in the most recent decade: from the controversies surrounding the Confucius Institute in the United States to the disputes over territories in South China Sea; from the hypervisibility of “Chinese” capital to the heterogeneous diasporas that contest what constitutes Chineseness; and from China’s “One Belt, One Road” master plan that integrates Central Asia and Southeast Asia to the struggles of democracy in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. As a geopolitical and discursive factor with global implications, the rise of China poses imminent epistemological and political challenges to American studies and its sense of the world. The 2. 01. 7 special issue of American Quarterly, “The Chinese Factor: Reorienting Global Imaginaries in American Studies,” will build on critical transpacific studies by complicating and interrogating existing paradigms for comprehending the rise of China discourse vis- à- vis the place of the United States in the world. As a new iteration of the Yellow Peril discourse, such orientalist imagining persistently reproduces and reifies China as a threatening and monolithic alterity. As such, this dominant discourse often erases and obscures heterogeneous genealogies, critical contestations, and translocal formations within and across China, Asia, the Pacific, and beyond. This special issue seeks to unpack the specific workings of this iteration through simultaneous valuation and devaluation, where Chinese market, labor, capital, language, and culture are alternately posited as vital to securing US global power yet highly suspicious and dispensable. How do we understand America’s schizophrenic imaginings of China and their implications, as China has risen from the ashes of the Cold War to this moment of neoliberal precarity as America’s greatest creditor, supplier, and contender for hegemony? How has America’s premier object of love and hate functioned as a historical, material, and cultural force in the US effort to remake itself in response to the shifting world order? What new archives could be activated to create openings onto alternative routes of knowledge, cultural and social formations, and political affiliations within and beyond the orbits of empires? This special issue welcomes critical practices, analyses, and visions that explore historical and contemporary intimacies of race, gender, sexuality, class, and nation in comparative contexts as ways to facilitate self- reflexive dialogues between American studies, critical ethnic studies, and Asian studies. Possible topics include but are not limited to the following: migrations, circuits of flexible accumulation of capital and networks of moving. US universities, and the emergence of global studies; valuation and devaluation of racialized, gendered, and sexualized bodies and labor. Cold War campaigns for democracy; and. Chinese/Taiwanese American cultural and social formations in spaces such as. Silicon Valley. Submissions are due August 1, 2. Authors must address the guest editors and clearly indicate in a cover letter that the submission is intended for the special issue. Accepted submissions will appear in American Quarterly, volume 6. Fall 2. 01. 7). Information about American Quarterly and submission guidelines can be found at http: //www. Published on March 2. ASASTAFF. New Georgia Encyclopedia. From July 1. 9 until August 4, 1. Atlanta hosted the Centennial Summer Olympic Games, an event that was without doubt the largest undertaking in the city's history. The goal of civic leaders was to promote Atlanta's image as an international city ready to play an important role in global commerce. Preparations for the Olympics took more than six years after the awarding of the bid to Atlanta and had an estimated economic impact on the city of at least $5. In the process Atlanta changed dramatically, as new sports venues were built, park space was created, sidewalks and streets were improved, and housing patterns were altered. During the seventeen days of the Olympics, more than 2 million visitors came to Atlanta, and an estimated 3. The 1. 99. 6 Olympics produced a significant legacy for Atlanta and its leaders. Preparations for the Games. In 1. 98. 7 an Atlanta attorney and former football player at the University of Georgia, Billy Payne, conceived the idea of hosting the 1. Summer Olympic Games. The local organizing committee headed by Payne and Young produced a two- volume bid document outlining the city's plans for the sporting events, financial support, and accommodations for Olympic visitors. Major selling points of the bid were the warmth of southern hospitality and the city's unique heritage as the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. Atlanta competed against five other cities for the right to host the 1. Olympics: Athens, Greece; Belgrade, Yugoslavia; Manchester, England; Melbourne, Australia; and Toronto, Canada. Payne, Young, and other volunteers traveled around the world promoting the city's bid to IOC delegates. The rich prize of hosting the Olympics resulted in a pattern of lavish gift- giving and providing favors to IOC members that cost the six cities competing for the games in excess of $1. . > Where can you find an official program of the 1996 Olympics in. the 1996 Olympics. is a program called topstepp. They will bond you for 25,000. IOC voting, but no evidence came to light until documents were released as part of a 1. Olympic bidding in the wake of a scandal in Salt Lake City, Utah. This pattern of attempting to influence IOC members appears to have been the norm among all the competing cities at the time. Preparations for the games were intense, since many of the sports venues had to be expanded and others needed to be designed and built. Funds came from a variety of sources, including more than $1 billion in public money as well as ticket sales and corporate sponsorships that were sold to many types of businesses, from television game show production companies to automobile, watch, and salad- dressing manufacturers. Private investment also came in the form of hotel construction as approximately 7,5. This brought the number of hotel rooms in the Atlanta area to more than 6. National chains opened themed restaurants along Peachtree Street in hopes of profiting from the crowds of Olympic visitors. The federal government spent millions of dollars on replacing sidewalks, installing pedestrian signs, planting trees, putting up new lighting, and installing public art. As soon as the streets in the downtown area were fixed up for Olympic visitors, a representative of city government leased space to temporary vendors in tents, stalls, and carts, creating a carnival atmosphere that became the subject of much controversy. Let the Games Begin. The opening ceremony on July 1. Olympic Stadium for a display honoring southern culture and the one- hundredth anniversary of the modern Olympic movement. The artistic success of the opening ceremonies gave way to problems the next day when the athletic competitions began. Members of the international press corps experienced transportation problems getting to venues near downtown from their housing in scattered locations throughout the metropolitan area. Many journalists were late or missed events as some buses broke down and a few drivers became lost. There were also delays in reporting the results of athletic events as a state- of- the- art computer system failed to deliver data from the various competition sites. This caused missed deadlines and added to the frustration of journalists from all over the world. Their reports on the games were critical of local organizers and the city itself. Those who came to watch the athletes were not disappointed by the 1. Other visitors came to Atlanta just to be a part of the huge event, creating a lively crowd enjoying free concerts in Centennial Olympic Park and other activities downtown. The pleasant mood of the Olympics changed suddenly in the early morning of July 2. Centennial Olympic Park during a concert, causing two deaths and more than 1. While the athletic competition continued, security became tighter for subsequent Olympic events. The Legacy of the 1. Olympic Games. Following the closing ceremony on August 4, there were mixed assessments of the games. Surveys showed that most visitors were impressed with Atlanta's efforts to host the games and left with a favorable opinion of the city. The members of the IOC were pleased with the athletic competition, the all- time high attendance, and the television coverage. On the other hand, they were critical of the commercialism surrounding the Atlanta games and the problems affecting international journalists. Downtown Atlanta received several tangible legacies from the Olympics. In addition to an improved pedestrian environment, preparations for the games included the construction of new housing and the conversion of existing buildings into lofts. This gave the city a twenty- four- hour population that helped reverse several decades of decline. Housing in several low- income neighborhoods near downtown also changed in preparation for the games. For example, the Techwood Homes public housing project was replaced by mixed- income apartments and dormitories to house Olympic athletes. Many of Atlanta's sports facilities were replaced or upgraded for the Olympics, including the Olympic Stadium, which was refitted as Turner Field, the home of Atlanta's professional baseball team, the Braves. The new Centennial Olympic Park provided additional greenspace and has attracted investment in housing and hotels in the area. Atlanta's tourism industry also received a boost from the Olympics. During the five years after the Olympics, the number of conventions hosted by the city increased each year, and the number of international tourists also grew. The hosting of the 1. Olympic Games made a lasting imprint on Atlanta, bringing increased attention and investment to the area from around the globe. In 2. 00. 6 the city celebrated the ten- year anniversary of the games with various ceremonies and celebrations, including the opening of the Centennial Olympic Games Museum at the Atlanta History Center in July.
